i guess this one’s the flip side of a lullaby.
monday song #95: double nickels turns three dimes
“double nickels on the dime” by the minutemen is a favorite album of mine and was hugely influential back when i was first trying my hand at live music in the late eighties. you’ll have a hard time finding an album more energetic and original. the rare balance of vision and humility has always been an inspiration.
i wasn’t cool enough to know about the album when it first came out in july of ’84. i’m still not.

monday song #94: drop the pail in the well
i liked last week’s song so much, wanted to see if i could give it a little sister.
monday song #93: lullaby (for m & w)
this is a song i made up spontaneously on a recent saturday night, but didn’t have the energy to pursue it. i listened to it yesterday and thought it had promise. not till i started wrestling with the lyrics did i realize it was a lullaby.
monday song #92: like i like you
i had the chords and the melody of the first few lines. felt like some colin hay song. just happy and miles from progressive rock.

monday song #91: my color wheel
i started work on this as another two-part song, but the second i had two, there just had to be three. the harmonies reminded my of the boswell sisters, though they get funky here and there.
monday song #90: let’s put on a show
this one started out as another paul-and-linda harmony piece, and then i had the idea to have the choruses follow the evolution of the band. the last section is pretty rocking, if i do say so myself. Continue reading “monday song #90: let’s put on a show”
monday song #89: i fly away
this week’s song was recorded way back in 2001. i was doing some work collecting music for my upcoming project about mania and remembered this little ditty.
monday song #88: moving forward standing still
i was planning a different song for this week, but when i got news pete seeger died, i wanted to write something for him.
i have long considered pete seeger at the top of my list of most admirable americans, a man with a spirit that deserves to be considered in the class of gandhi, martin luther king, and harvey milk, but having the benefit of living his life to its natural end.

monday song #87: nocturne
this is one of the prettier songs i’ve written. as with many of the previous posts, it’s guitar, plus harmony vocal; tunes for the latest paul n linda record.
